Medical Biochemistry: Metabolism of Fats and Lipids

A story of how the body digests, absorption and utilize fats and lipids gotten from foods such as burger, fries & drinks

In this course, we will start our journey with the story of fat digestion and absorption in the intestines, all the way to how our body cells utilize the absorbed chylomicron units. We will tell the story of how fat is synthesized and packaged as lipoproteins after eating a high carbohydrate meal. Then we will look at what happens to fats & lipids metabolism when we are in a fasting state

What you’ll learn

  • Understanding Fats and Lipids digestion & absorption.
  • Learn the several pathways and how they are regulated.
  • Clinical relevance of fats & lipids metabolism.
  • Review of some clinical case questions.

To teach this in a very interesting manner, we have divided this course into four (5) sections with about eighteen (18) lecture videos arranged in four (4) sections with the fifth section set aside to review clinical case questions.

The content of this course is as follow:

  • Eating Food Rich in Fats & Lipids:
    • Overview of Fats & Lipids Digestion
    • Absorption of Digested Fats as Chylomicrons and Steatorrhea
  • Eating High Carbohydrate Meals:
    • Fatty Acids Biosynthesis
    • Triglyceride Synthesis
    • Cholesterol Synthesis
    • Lipoproteins Metabolism
    • LDL Receptors
    • Hyperlipidaemias
  • Fasting State
    • Lipid Mobilization
    • Overview of Fatty Acids Oxidation
    • Peroxisomal Oxidation of VLCFA
    • Fatty Acids Transport into the Mitochondria
    • Beta Oxidation of Fatty Acids
    • Oxidation of Odd Chains Fatty Acids
    • Ketone Bodies Metabolism
  • Phospholipids, Sphingolipids & Eicosanoids
    • Phospholipids
    • Sphingolipids & Sphingolipidoses
    • Eicosanoids

We will also consider some clinical Multiple Choice Questions Review as it relates to Fats & Lipids Metabolism.
